Dear families and carers,
What a beautiful week of Canberra winter weather we have enjoyed, icy frosts followed by beautiful sunshine, the students have loved running their hands through the ice covering everything in the early mornings!
PERMAH
As we continue our journey of embedding PERMAH into everything we do at Holy Trinity I have been speaking with some of our learners who have shared what they understand around the language of PERMAH. The P of PERMAH is described as positive emotion. Positive emotion is much more than mere 'happiness‘. Positive emotions include hope, interest, joy, love, compassion, pride, amusement, and gratitude. Positive emotions are a prime indicator of flourishing, and they can be cultivated or learned to improve wellbeing (Fredrickson, 2001).
When individuals can explore, savour, and integrate positive emotions into daily life (and visualizations of future life), it improves habitual thinking and acting. Positive emotions can undo the harmful effects of negative emotions and promote resilience (Tugade & Fredrickson, 2004).
Increasing positive emotions helps individuals build physical, intellectual, psychological, and social resources that lead to this resilience and overall wellbeing.
Anton in Kinder G says he makes himself feel positive through being kind to my friends.
Pearl in Year 1 R says she spends time with her dog and walks him so she can feel positive and happy.
Mr Hart in Year 3 exercises to build his positive emotion, he likes to go for a run, a surf or a skatebaord. It helps to clear his head and brings him joy!
Neve in 5 Green likes to listen to music, happy songs make her feel more positive and feel more joyful. Playing sports helps to take her mind off negative things, especially team sports because she is with other people. Being with people makes Neve feel more positive.
Max in 6 Red likes to have quiet time, he finds a space in his bedroom to take time out and do something that is a passion like rubiks cube or switch.
Ways to build your own positive emotion may include:
- Spending time with people you care about
- Doing hobbies and creative activities that you enjoy
- Listening to music
- Reflecting on things you are grateful for and what is going well in your life
I wonder if you can think of simple ways you could integrate positive emotions into your daily lives and discussions with your children?

Student Absences
Just a reminder that any student absences need to be entered into COMPASS. Reports will be sent out in Week 10 and any unexplained absences will be noted on the semester reports. If you have outstanding unexplained absences please go into COMPASS and update the absence information.
Nut Free
With several students being anaphylatic to nut products we ask our families to avoid sending in items in lunch boxes that contain nuts and nut products. This helps to keep all our students safe at school. If you have any questions around this please reach out prue.sheargold@cg.catholic.edu.au
Confirmation
It was wonderful to celebrate the Year 6 students on Tuesday and Wednesday evening this week making the Sacrament of Confirmation. Fr John and Archbishop Prowse were presented the candidates and shared the message to open our hearts to the Holy Spirit and be a witness to our faith. Thank you to Catherine Joy for her organisation and preparation with our families.
Learning Conferences
Next week we begin our Learning Conferences, we hope you enjoy sharing your child's learning journey and celebrating their growth across semester one. Our teachers have been working to prepare reports and conferences that reflect the growth for the students in their classrooms, and next steps for learning in semester 2. I personally thank the staff for their commitment to the quality teaching and learning across Holy Trinity. If you have not booked in for your meeting, the bookings close tomorrow.
Have a lovely weekend when it arrives.

Confirmation Retreat Day
Last Friday our Year 6 students from Holy Trinity, Sts Peter and Paul and other parish schools participated in our Confirmation Retreat Day. It was a wonderful day preparing these students to receive this Sacrament, reflecting on the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit.
Sacrament of Confirmation
Congratulations to our students who received the Sacrament of Confirmation with such reverence on Tuesday & Wednesday evening. It was a very special occasion for our students and families and the culmination of weeks of prayer and preparation. Thank you to Archbishop Christopher, Father John and to Miss Winter, Mrs Hudson & Mr O’Rourke for their dedication, care and support in preparing our students.

School Holiday Program
Our School Holiday Program is currently being finalised and bookings will open in Week 9 for casual bookings (dependent on availability). We can't give too much away, but we can reveal that our Wednesdays are going to be wacky!
Stay tuned for the Program and booking details.
Learning Journeys
We are excited to welcome parents into the ELC during our upcoming Learning Journeys, which will be held on the following dates:
- Black Cockatoo 24 – 25 June 2024 (Week 9)
- Rock Wallaby 26 – 27 June 2024 (Week 9)
- Ground Parrot 2 – 3 July 2024 (Week 10)
We value family input and building partnerships with families as it allows us to foster a greater sense of belonging for both the children and the parents. Family input is about working together. We know that when parents and educators find ways to collaborate, it strengthens the child’s identity and enhances their learning.
ELC Facebook
Holy Trinity ELC now has a Facebook page, which we encourage you to follow. We will post updates, reminders and share some of the wonderful learning experiences that our children get up to.

Redevelopment of Our House Group Identities - Part 3
Please find below part 3 of the stories of our new House Group identities. See Week 7's Newsletter for more information on the background of the redevelopment.
Maga
Maga is the Ngunnawal word for fire.
This house unites under the symbol of fire and the value of love. They also have the echidna and the colour red as a symbol of their identity.
Fire radiates heat and light, just as love has the power to illuminate our lives with affection and compassion. We understand that fire can spread rapidly and ignite change, similar to the transformative nature of love which can inspire us to evolve and reach our full potential. However, we also acknowledge that fire requires careful tending to prevent it from burning out of control, as love demands nurturing, communication, and understanding to flourish harmoniously. At Holy Trinity, love is the fire that burns within us that inspires us to do our best for ourselves and for others.
