Dear families and carers,
This week we celebrated the feast of the Assumption, and our staff and students reflected on the incredible impact Mary's life continues to have on us all. Mary's selflessness was reflectived throughout her entire life- a women whose faithfulness, kindness and love continues to impact our lives as Christians today. We welcome Leah and the Corradin family to 3 Red and the Holy Trinity community this week.
A huge thank you to the Community Council volunteers who organised the Treat Tuesday this week. The donuts were delicious! There were many children licking sugar and cinnamon with full tummies across the school!
On Friday we were treated to a peak into what has been happening in Kinder Red. They shared their learning about their inquiry into how choices have the potential to impact an individual, the community and the world around us. Through songs and words they informed the rest of our school community how we too can be water Warriors, Recycling Rangers and Energy Experts. It was wonderful to hear from our youngest learners how we can all make simple choices to make a difference!
Science Week
This week across the school we have celebrated National Science Week. Year 1 have shared their explorations as part of their Science Day.
Year 1 began their day with a fascinating lesson on the role of pollinators in our environment, led by our friends from Questacon. This insight enhanced our exploration of the "How the World Works" unit, which we had started with a visit to an urban farm on Monday.
Next, they delved into the states of matter—solid, liquid, and gas. The students conducted an exciting experiment where they mixed bicarbonate of soda (a solid) with vinegar (a liquid) to create a gas that inflated a balloon. There were many gasps of excitement and a few nervous glances as we hoped the balloon wouldn’t explode!
Year 1 students explored weather concepts by creating their own "weather in a jar." Shaving foam represented clouds, while food colouring simulated rain. As the foam absorbed the liquid, it became denser and began to descend, illustrating how precipitation forms. Watching the colour seep through the foam provided a clear visual of how rain falls from clouds. This hands-on activity made learning about weather patterns both engaging and memorable for the students during Science Week.
A special thanks to Mrs Petersen (Mum of Rosie and Mackenzie) from Questacon who led the activities on pollinators with Kinder and Year 1.
Two Before Ten - Urban Farm Excursion
On Monday Year 1 ventured out to Two Before Ten in Aranda to visit and learn about their urban farm as a provocation to our new unit ‘How the World Works’. The visit began with a delightful treat—a delicious hot chocolate. Throughout the morning, students engaged in learning about the compost cycle, including how our cups were added to the compost bin and then later used as soil. The learners loved hearing about the different types of plants and seasonal fruit / vegetables. It was great to learn about the chefs and the processes they use to deliver a seasonal menu based on what is growing in the garden.

Zoo Provocation
We continue to observe the different ways that children are making connections between their experience of the zoo visit and thier developing ways of thinking. The beauty of inquiry learning is that all three classes participated in the zoo visit, however all are exploring the key concepts in different ways - a true sign that the learning is guided by the group, reflecting the needs and interests of the children.
Black Cockatoo class had a chance to reflect on the zoo excursion, by viewing photos and sequencing several events that took place on the day. The children were then invited to draw pictures of these key events, before verbally recounting the excursion using words such as 'firstly', 'then' and 'lastly'.
Rock Wallaby class were shown a collection of items, as another provocation. How can we sort these items? Collaboratively. the children identified different characteristics and grouped them accordingly. Sorting objects is an important mathematical skill that requires children to make observations and identify similarities and differences. To support this development, our children are encouraged to be involved in sorting objects at home.
Working Bee
Throughout our enrolment period, we welcomed a large number of prospective parents into our ELC. When taking them around our learning environments, many were impressed with and commented on our outdoor spaces. We too, love our playground.
ELC and school community members are warmly invited to join our working bee on Saturday 31 August 2024, from 9:30am.
We will have sand and tanbark to wheelbarrow in, as well as some painting to be done. ...and if that is not your thing, perhaps you are a handy baker and could provide something for the morning tea break?
Be sure to bring along your gloves, shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows (if you have them). We look forward to seeing many little and big hands working together to make a difference.
Hats, Hats, Hats
Our SunSmart policy states that all children and staff are required to wear hats when outside from August to May each year. Please ensure your child has a clearly labelled hat each day and support them in applying sunscreen when they arrive in the morning.
ELC Facebook
Holy Trinity ELC now has a Facebook page, which we encourage you to follow. We will post updates, reminders and share some of the wonderful learning experiences that our children get up to.

Holy Trinity did a fabulous job with the CMRC this year and we were successful in completing the challenge in all categories. – Year 5/6, Year 3/4 and ELC – Year 2. Congratulations to us all.
As a result of our efforts three great readers and myself were invited to attend the CMRC award ceremony.
Yesterday, Audrey, Sam, Alice and yours truly went to the National Library with 20 other schools and received our certificate and book vouchers from Paper Chain in Manuka. It was frightfully glamorous; speeches, special guests, including the Chief Minister, Canberra authors, official photos, musical ensembles and afternoon tea.
To finish up, I then took the three children to Paper Chain Bookstore in Manuka to purchase a few books with our winnings and we then had a quick milkshake.
Audrey, Sam and Alice are not only wonderful readers but also were perfect ambassadors for our school. God Bless gorgeous children.
Happy Thursday,
KM xx
The Great Book Swap, in support of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
We ask all students to donate a book from their home library for The Great Book Swap.
On Wednesday 4 September 2024 we invite students to bring a gold coin (or note!) to school to spend at the Book Swap. Everyone will walk away with a ‘new’ book to read.
The Great Book Swap is a fantastic way to celebrate reading locally, learn more about Indigenous Languages and culture, while raising funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. This event provides an opportunity to discuss with your children the literacy (and education gap) that exists for first nation Australians and why programs such as the Indigenous Literacy Foundation are essential. |

Last week I was recognised as a Highly Accomplished Teacher at an award ceremony held at St Christopher’s Cathedral. This award recognised the two-year journey I have taken to analyse my teaching practice and be acknowledged for the many hours of work I put in as a dedicated and passionate classroom teacher. Over the last two years, I have submitted portfolios with annotated evidence that have addressed the Australian Professional Standards for Highly Accomplished Teachers. Principals and teaching colleagues have observed my teaching practice within the classroom and referees have been required to submit evaluative comments about my different roles and the impact these roles have had within the school. The Certification of Highly Accomplished Teachers is an important aspect of teacher quality that helps to develop, recognise and support excellent teachers within Australia. Throughout my years of teaching, I am grateful to have worked with many wonderful and supportive colleagues who have helped make this award possible.
